The Assistant Director, Tax will be responsible for coordinating the Hartford State Indirect

Tax processes which includes:

  • Review and filing of sales & use, and personal property tax
  • returns and associated payments.
  • Management of sales & use tax audits, specifically CT, but
  • other states as needed.
  • Coordinate with The Hartford’s procurement team to ensure
  • that sales taxes have been properly applied to purchases.
  • Oversee various tax projects, planning initiatives, and
  • automation strategies.
  • Candidate is expected to operate with minimal day-to-day supervision
  • and function with a high degree of autonomy.

Responsibilities:

  • Review state tax compliance ensuring timely and accurate filings in
  • accordance with state and local laws and regulations
  • Manage day to day aspects of state sales & use tax audits, primarily CT, but
  • also other states as needed. Work with external consultants on refund
  • opportunities
  • Provide oversight of purchasing system (Coupa) tax process, support
  • procurement inquires and facilitate weekly meetings to address issues and
  • drive progress
  • Coordinate indirect tax process improvement projects to improve quality and
  • efficiency.
  • Monitor state indirect tax legislation and assist AVP of State Taxes in
  • assessing the impact to The Hartford.
  • Support various tax department priorities including tax planning initiatives and
  • other special projects.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years’ experience in state tax, insurance background preferred
  • Proficient with tax research tools and Microsoft office Suite
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent
  • CPA preferred
  • In depth understanding of state and local tax laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices related to state tax
  • Understanding of financial reporting standards and practices
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex tax concepts to non-tax
  • Stakeholders
  • Ability to identify and resolve tax related issues effectively and efficiently
  • Strong time and project management skills

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$110,800 - $166,200
