The Middle & Large Assistant Director of Strategy partners with the Head of Strategy and cross-functional leaders to support the development and execution of Business Unit strategy in alignment with overall ML priorities, driving improved performance and market share growth.

This role contributes to shaping how the business differentiates in the market by leveraging data, insights, and market trends to identify opportunities and inform strategic direction. The Assistant Director brings strong analytical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and a problem-solving mindset to translate strategy into actionable plans and measurable outcomes.

This role reports to the Head of Strategy, ML and is based in Brea, CA.

Responsibilities:

  • Support development and execution of business strategy, including strategic priorities, roadmaps, and action plans.

  • Partner with ML leaders to analyze performance, market dynamics, and competitive trends to inform decisions.

  • Translate insights into clear, actionable recommendations and support tracking against strategic objectives.

  • Contribute to multi-year strategic planning through market research, competitor assessments, constituent assessments, financial analysis, and synthesis of key insights.

  • Support execution of strategic initiatives and workstreams, driving coordination, timelines, and progress to outcomes.

  • Leverage data, competitive intelligence, and customer insights to inform decisions and accelerate execution.

  • Develop clear, concise materials (e.g., presentations, memos) for senior leadership.

  • Facilitate working sessions to advance strategic alignment and decision-making.

  • Partner across functions (e.g., Finance, Distribution, Product, Underwriting) to support execution of priorities.

  • Contribute to leadership deliverables by providing analysis, insights, and synthesized messaging.
     

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of prior Commercial Underwriting, Product, or Strategy related experience is required.

  • Strong business and financial acumen, with ability to assess performance and implications.

  • Proven ability to synthesize data into clear, actionable insights.

  • Clear and effective communicator, able to convey complex ideas concisely to varied audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build relationships across a matrixed organization.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work under tight timelines.

  • Intellectual curiosity and adaptable with interest in market, customer, and competitive dynamics.

  • Ability to operate independently with appropriate alignment and guidance.

  • Experience supporting cross-functional initiatives with multiple stakeholders.

  • Collaborative, with a constructive approach to challenging and advancing thinking.

  • Demonstrated interest in leveraging AI/GenAI to improve productivity and deliver measurable business value.

  • This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Brea, CA) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$100,000 - $150,000
