Summary – Senior Consultant, Alternative Placement Solutions

As a key member of our Alternative Placement Solutions team, you will be at the forefront of driving innovation and profitable growth for The Hartford. This high-impact role offers a unique opportunity to shape our alternative risk placement strategy from initial concept through execution, with the objective to solve for more target customer needs. You will partner with senior leaders across the organization to design and implement innovative program structures that enhance our value proposition for clients, distribution partners, and capital providers. Success in this role requires enterprise mindset, strong ownership, and the ability to influence without authority—bringing clarity, modeling integrity, and translating complex analysis into decisive, actionable recommendations.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Alt Placement Underwriting Program Strategy & Financial Analytics

Drive the direction and develop the opportunity pipeline for Alt Placement programs in collaboration with the Head of Alt Placement, APS Strategy Deal Team Lead, APS Partnerships and Programs Lead, and Business Insurance segment leaders—demonstrating strong business acumen, an enterprise-first perspective, and disciplined prioritization.

Support sourcing, marketing, and underwriting of business use cases, bringing a consultative approach that balances speed with rigor.
Support development of business cases and financial analyses to evaluate, prioritize, and execute initiatives aligned with Business Insurance strategic objectives—framing options, assumptions, tradeoffs, and recommended actions clearly for executive audiences.
Partner with business leaders to assess program structure, economic viability, and scalability of alternative placement solutions; build alignment across stakeholders, anticipate downstream operational impacts, and drive decisions to completion with clear ownership and follow-through.

Alt Placement Business Case Evaluation & Deal Analysis

Own the financial modeling and analysis to guide decision-making for Alternative Placement opportunities across P&C, modeling strong judgment, transparency of assumptions, and a high bar for data quality.
Develop financial projections, pro‑formas, and scenario analyses to assess profitability, capital efficiency, and risk/return tradeoffs of program opportunities; communicate insights in a way that builds confidence, enables timely decisions, and supports effective governance.

Assess, evaluate, and prioritize Alt Placement opportunities that solve for out of appetite risk, build innovation intelligence, and create a seamless customer experience—grounded in disciplined underwriting and an informed view of market dynamics.
Deliver data‑driven insights and strategic recommendations to senior stakeholders to influence deal structure, pricing, and go‑forward strategy; demonstrate executive presence, constructive challenge, and the ability to navigate ambiguity with pace and confidence.
Support evaluation of third‑party capital participation by assessing economic alignment, return expectations, and structural considerations; proactively surface risks, propose mitigations, and ensure decisions align to our risk appetite, governance requirements, and long-term value creation.

Program Financial Due Diligence & Modeling

Build, maintain, and stress‑test financial models (e.g., cash flow projections, scenario and sensitivity analyses) to evaluate program economics and performance under varying assumptions; continuously improve tools and methodologies to increase accuracy, usability, and decision relevance.
Assess financial sustainability and long‑term value creation for HIG, MGUs, and capital partners; partner across Underwriting, Finance, Actuarial, and Operations to ensure models reflect operational realities and deliver clear, actionable insights.
Conduct market, industry, and competitive research to support recommendations on underwriting parameters, program structure, and growth opportunities; translate findings into practical implications and recommendations that inform strategy and execution.

Portfolio Monitoring & Performance Management

Architect and implement a robust framework for monitoring the financial performance of in-force programs, providing critical insights to drive continuous improvement and timely course correction. Demonstrate accountability by setting clear performance expectations, escalating issues early, and ensuring stakeholders have the information needed to make informed decisions.

Drive program launch, performance monitoring, and scaling decisions, ensuring alignment with underwriting appetite and margin objectives—and reinforcing strong controls, documentation, and decision discipline.
Analyze portfolio performance trends, key drivers, and variances against expectations; clearly distinguish signal from noise and recommend targeted actions to address root causes.
Deliver ongoing performance insights, feedback, dashboards, and recommendations to business leaders to support oversight and continuous improvement; communicate with candor, clarity, and a solutions orientation.
Support data governance, reporting standards, and downstream performance measurement requirements for Alt Placement Solutions programs; model stewardship of data, consistency of definitions, and high-quality execution across partners.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

Partner with colleagues across Finance, Strategy, Underwriting, and Operations supporting Business Insurance alternative placement initiatives—building trust through strong relationships, responsiveness, and reliable delivery.
Manage internal stakeholder relationships and communicate concepts in a clear, concise, and actionable manner; tailor messages to the audience and simplify complex topics without oversimplifying the risk/return implications.
Prepare executive‑level presentations and materials summarizing financial performance, opportunity assessments, and strategic recommendations; demonstrate confidence, professionalism, and the ability to facilitate productive discussions and decisions.

Role will require the ability to partner with cross functional teams and leverage a combination of thought leadership, bias for action, and continuous improvement mindset to build and deliver strategic capabilities/assets that unlock new sources of growth and transform the business with Alt Placement solutions. This includes modeling integrity, constructive challenge, and strong follow-through—raising issues early, proposing solutions, and driving work to closure in a way that strengthens stakeholder confidence and business outcomes.

Leadership Behaviors & Profile Expectations

In addition to technical excellence, this role is expected to demonstrate leadership behaviors consistent with influencing outcomes, strengthening partnerships, and delivering results with integrity:

  • Continuous improvement & learning agility: Seeks feedback, improves models and processes, and stays current on alternative capital structures, market trends, and analytics practices.
  • Integrity, governance, and risk discipline: Demonstrates transparency in assumptions, adheres to controls and governance, and supports a culture of doing the right thing—especially when navigating ambiguity or pressure.
