We are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Instructional Designer to join our team.  The ideal candidate is a seasoned professional who can lead complex learning initiatives, influence business strategy, and deliver measurable performance outcomes. This role requires deep expertise in instructional design, advanced facilitation and consulting skills, and a proven ability to collaborate across functions to drive enterprise-wide learning transformation. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, matrixed environment and is ready to shape learning strategy at scale.

Role Overview

This role leads strategic learning initiatives in partnership with business leaders, driving performance improvement and aligning solutions with enterprise KPIs. It integrates instructional design, change management, and learning analytics to create engaging, data-informed programs that support employee development and organizational transformation. The role also manages performance support content, facilitates cross-functional initiatives, and ensures learning strategies are consistent, measurable, and business-relevant.

WORK ARRANGEMENTS: 

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work schedule. Candidates who live near one of our office locations (Hartford, CT, San Antonio, TX, Scottsdale, AZ , Charlotte, NC or any of the other office locations) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Business Collaboration Communication and Delivery

  • Consult and collaborate with project teams, training leadership, and business leaders to propose learning solution design and strategy.
  • Use influence and exceptional communication skills to help business partners understand and buy into learning strategies.
  • Interface with legal and business leadership to obtain approval signoff on materials before deployment.
  • Facilitate train-the-trainer sessions and prepare reports on skill assessments, training participation, and related topics.
  • Promote consistency in learning across the organization and operationalize the overall learning strategy.
  • Align learning solutions with business priorities and key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure strategic relevance.

Change Management

  • Lead efforts to anticipate business needs, identify performance gaps, and generate innovative learning solutions.
  • Partner with leadership to coordinate and execute creative strategies to close performance gaps.
  • Serve as liaison for business partners’ tactical projects and strategic initiatives, ensuring early engagement to meet long-range performance improvement needs.
  • Address ongoing learning needs and manage internal and external opportunities for employee development.
  • Monitor and evaluate training techniques and materials to ensure currency and incorporation of the newest techniques.
  • Support enterprise transformation through learning initiatives that align with organizational change efforts.

Instructional Design

  • Apply adult learning theory and instructional design models to create engaging, interactive, and performance-based learning materials.
  • Employ blended learning approaches including role plays, teach backs, case studies, and simulations.
  • Create learning using appropriate modalities: self-directed, virtual, instructor-led, and adaptive learning.
  • Develop assessment strategies using pre-learning skill assessments, competency self-assessments, knowledge checks, and final tests.
  • Possess advanced skills in eLearning authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, Camtasia, Engage, Drillster, Questonbank, Co-pilot 365, JavaScript, video, and audio.
  • Ensure all deliverables align with design best practices, e-learning standards, and templates.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in LMS platforms (e.g., Workday Learning, Cornerstone, SuccessFactors) including course setup, tracking, reporting, and user management.
  • Leverage LMS analytics to monitor learner progress and optimize content delivery.

Performance Support

  • Conduct customer needs analysis and identify business and performance impacts.
  • Respond to business needs with learning solutions that include measurable objectives focused on behavioral outcomes.
  • Evaluate program and curriculum effectiveness through data collection and measurement against defined goals.
  • Identify curricula updates and performance support needs; maintain and enhance existing materials using feedback from legal, SMEs, business leaders, and peers.
  • Create sustainable and evolving Learning Journeys to support staff development and career progression.
  • Track deliverable effectiveness and organizational measures such as AHT (Average Handle Time), Quality, and Profitability.

Learning Analytics

  • Use data to evaluate learner engagement, completion rates, assessment scores, and performance improvement.
  • Leverage dashboards and tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, LMS analytics) to present insights to stakeholders.
  • Identify trends and gaps to inform future learning strategies and enhance curriculum effectiveness.

Project Management

  • Apply project management concepts to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of learning projects.
  • Lead or participate in project teams to meet milestones and deliverables.
  • Design programs that provide technical, functional, and project management expertise.
  • Set work priorities and apply problem-solving and critical thinking to make sound decisions.
  • Demonstrate strong time management and resource coordination skills.
  • Align learning project outcomes with strategic business goals and report on progress using defined success metrics.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a corporate learning organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design or related field, or equivalent business experience.
  • Excellent performance consulting, facilitation, and project management skills.
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and e-learning software.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and time management abilities.
  • Working understanding of adult learning theory.
  • Proficiency in ADDIE design methodology (AGILE experience a plus).
  • Effective relationship-building and collaboration skills in a corporate environment.

Preferred

  • EB Ops experience preferred
  • Experience with e-learning software and adaptive learning tools.
  • Experience aligning learning solutions with enterprise KPIs and strategic initiatives.
  • Familiarity with learning analytics platforms and data visualization tools.
  • Hands-on experience with LMS administration and reporting.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$89,600 - $134,400
