Role Summary

The Hartford’s Actuarial Engineering & Insights Enablement (AEIE) organization is seeking a Director, Shared Engineering Services to lead Actuarial’s Systems engineering and AI workflows enablement. The Director will design and own application solution architecture, set automation standards, scale and govern AI-augmented workflows, and serve as IT risk-management lead for Actuarial. These capabilities enable governed and modern platforms, intelligent actuarial products, and business-critical actuarial applications. This role is expected to partner closely with CIO, CTO, Enterprise Architecture, Actuarial engineering teams and product-owners to enable business outcomes.


This role will have a hybrid work arrangement. Candidates will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday) in either Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC. Must be eligible to work in the US without company sponsorship.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct leadership of 6-8 cloud engineers establishing common engineering capabilities for reusable architecture patterns, automation at scale, and systems reliability.
  • Own application solution architecture, solution-design reviews, and 3-year Technology roadmap execution to rationalize and modernize Actuarial applications
  • Serve as IT-risk lead by overseeing vulnerability remediation, application observability and systems incident-health
  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools to improve coding efficiency, testing quality, and documentation consistency at scale.
  • Lead AI application workflow engineering and partner with peer engineering teams as well as Enterprise to design agentic AI solutions.
  • Influence peer-leaders, technology, and business leaders on priorities, sequencing, and trade-offs for solutions.
  • Oversee use of CI/CD pipelines to build, scan, test, and deploy code, including pipelines supporting agentic systems.
  • Partner to deliver FinOps transparency and optimization for AWS, Snowflake, engineering platforms, and AI consumption services.
  • Mentor and Develop Talent: Foster a collaborative, high-performance team culture, providing guidance and development opportunities for team members.
     

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of applicable software engineering experience, with 3-5 years leading leaders, multiple teams, preferably a shared engineering function.
  • Certifications (Preferred): Relevant cloud/data engineering certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Cloud certified engineer), digital transformation, or insurance analytics.
  • Experience leading solution architecture, shared engineering services, or enterprise application modernization across multiple teams.
  • Experience codifying ways of working across teams, including engineering practices, DevSecOps standards, and delivery discipline.
  • Proficient in modern software architecture, full-stack development, APIs, integration patterns, cloud platforms, containers, and distributed systems.
  • Champions collaborative and continuous learning mindset with strong cognitive skills to build value-added domain-engineering solutions for Actuarial products
  • Working knowledge of agentic AI concepts, AI-assisted development tools, human-AI interaction patterns, production controls, AI security risks, and Responsible AI practices.
  • Demonstrated people leadership, talent development, cross-functional alignment, execution management, and decision-making in ambiguous environments

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$152,000 - $228,000
