Executive Underwriter - UW07CD

We’re determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals – and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

At The Hartford, we help people achieve amazing things by protecting what matters most. As a Construction Underwriter, you’ll be at the heart of that mission—joining a team known across the industry for delivering tailored solutions for complex construction risks, including programs with loss sensitive and alternative risk financing structures.

What You’ll Do

As a Middle & Large Business Construction Underwriter, you’ll lead the sales and underwriting process for complex construction accounts, including those with loss sensitive features such as large deductibles, self‑insured retentions, and other alternative program structures. You'll partner closely with agents, brokers, and internal stakeholders to deliver sustainable, profitable solutions.

Your role will include:

  • Leading underwriting and pricing strategy for complex construction risks, including loss‑sensitive and structured programs

  • Managing account stewardship, renewal planning, and retention strategies

  • Evaluating loss experience, risk controls, and insured financials to support loss‑sensitive decision‑making

  • Driving strategic planning and operational excellence across your portfolio

  • Identifying cross‑sell and up‑sell opportunities across casualty and related lines

  • Collaborating with a high‑performing, results‑oriented team in a shared‑success culture

What Sets This Role Apart

  • Exposure to loss‑sensitive construction programs and complex risk structures

  • A seat at the table with underwriting, product, actuarial, and sales leadership

  • A culture that values innovation over tradition

  • Career growth aligned to your goals—technical leadership or people leadership

  • A collaborative, inclusive environment where your expertise and perspective matter

We’ll Be a Good Match If You Have:

  • Experience underwriting complex construction casualty risks, including or adjacent to loss‑sensitive programs

  • Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills, particularly when evaluating loss history and risk characteristics

  • Financial acumen and sound underwriting judgment

  • A customer‑first mindset with a collaborative, relationship‑driven approach

  • Ownership mentality with consistent follow‑through

  • Adaptability in a dynamic, evolving marketplace

  • A desire to learn and grow within Middle & Large Business underwriting

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of construction casualty underwriting experience preferred
Experience with loss‑sensitive programs, large deductibles, or structured accounts a plus

  • Prior commercial construction carrier underwriting experience required

  • Proven success building internal and external partnerships

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and decision‑making abilities

  • High‑energy, entrepreneurial mindset with resilience

  • Travel: 25%-30% to neighboring states

  • Valid driver’s license (company pool car may be provided)
