We’re determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working at The Hartford means having the opportunity to grow your career while helping shape the future of insurance through data, AI, and modern engineering.

The Hartford is seeking a Junior Developer / Junior Data Engineer to join our AI Enablement organization. This role is ideal for someone early in their career who is excited to learn, build, and contribute to real, production-grade AI and data platforms alongside experienced Data Scientists, Engineers, and Technical Leaders.

This position is not expected to own end-to-end platforms or initiatives. Instead, you will work on well-defined components within larger AI systems, gaining hands-on experience while being supported by senior engineers and data scientists.

Role Scope & Expectations (Important)

  • This role is part of a ~20-person AI Enablement team with shared ownership across platforms.
  • You will focus on specific tasks, components, or features, not full systems.
  • Success is measured by learning, code quality, reliability, and collaboration, not independent ownership.
  • You will receive mentorship, design guidance, and code reviews from senior team members.
  • Key Responsibilities

Data & Platform Development

  • Contribute to the development of data pipelines, APIs, and services supporting AI and analytics platforms.
  • Assist in building and maintaining cloud-based data workflows for structured and unstructured data.
  • Write clean, well-documented, and testable code following established standards.

AI & Analytics Enablement (Scoped Contributions)

  • Support AI platforms such as:
    • Synthetic data generation components (Deep Synthetic Foundry)
    • Text and document processing pipelines (OCR, NLP, IDP)
    • Image or multimodal data workflows
  • Implement clearly defined features or enhancements under guidance from senior engineers.

Data Engineering Foundations

  • Work with SQL and cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake) to ingest, transform, and validate data.
  • Help ensure data quality, reliability, and performance in production pipelines.
  • Learn best practices for monitoring, logging, and operational support.

Collaboration & Learning

  • Partner with Data Scientists, Engineers, and Product team members on shared goals.
  • Participate in design discussions, sprint planning, and code reviews.
  • Continuously learn modern tools, frameworks, and AI-related technologies.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 0–2 years of experience (including internships, co-ops, or academic projects).
  • Familiarity with Python and basic software development concepts.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and data structures.
  • Interest in data engineering, analytics, or AI systems.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn.

Preferred

  • Exposure to cloud platforms or modern data stacks.
  • Experience with APIs, ETL pipelines, or data processing frameworks.
  • Coursework or projects related to data engineering, machine learning, or analytics.
  • Curiosity about AI, NLP, computer vision, or synthetic data (experience not required).

Why This Role

  • Early-career friendly with strong mentorship.
  • Work on real production systems, not toy projects.
  • Clear growth path into Data Engineering or Applied Data Science roles.
  • Opportunity to learn AI platforms used across the enterprise.

Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
