The Hartford’s Corporate IT organization is seeking a highly motivated, detail‑oriented, and results‑driven Staff Software Engineer (Hybrid) to work on an Agile team supporting applications across Human Resources, Law, and Shared Services. This role builds and supports both investment and maintenance work for a portfolio of applications that enable employee lifecycle processes, legal operations, compliance, and shared enterprise services.

The Staff Software Engineer has end‑to‑end responsibility for designing, building, and supporting solutions across multiple platforms and technologies. The primary focus of the role is AWS‑based data integration and transformation, with an emphasis on AWS Glue, along with Tableau and data experience. The role also requires moderate to strong experience with AI or GenAI concepts, integrations, or applied use cases as these capabilities are expanded across HR and Law platforms. In addition, the role requires working knowledge of .NET applications (C# .NET) to support and modernize existing applications within the portfolio.

This position works closely with product owners, business stakeholders, architects, and partner teams, and is accountable for delivering well‑architected, stable, performant, and secure solutions while continuing to modernize platforms through cloud, automation, and data integration initiatives. The role has a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in the office three days per week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for end‑to‑end solution delivery (design, build, test, and support) involving multiple platforms and business solutions supporting HR, Law, and Shared Services.

  • Design, build, and maintain AWS‑based data integrations and transformations, with a focus on AWS Glue and related services.

  • Design and implement robust API‑based integrations and cloud‑native services, ensuring scalability, security, and reliability across enterprise platforms.

  • Build and support application components and integrations that include .NET (C# .NET) solutions as part of the broader application portfolio.

  • Contribute significant input into application and integration architecture, helping safeguard the integrity of the application environment in partnership with architects and other tech leads.

  • Function as a technical subject matter expert for supported applications, requiring depth and breadth of knowledge across technologies, integrations, interfaces, and business domains.

  • Support analytics and reporting needs, including datasets used for dashboards and Tableau‑based reporting where applicable.

  • Build and implement CI/CD capabilities aligned with enterprise DevOps practices.

  • Follow and promote software engineering best practices including source control, branching strategies, issue tracking, code quality rules, automated testing, and documentation.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve application issues, including performance concerns, and communicate risks and mitigation plans clearly and concisely.

  • Collaborate closely with team members and partner teams to plan work, manage priorities, and drive team outcomes.

  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership, influencing engineering standards, practices, and technical direction beyond the immediate team, including presenting and communicating complex technical concepts to broader audiences.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience designing, developing, and supporting software applications with end‑to‑end accountability.

  • Working knowledge of .NET application development (C# .NET) and supporting web applications and integrations in a production environment.

  • Strong experience designing and implementing API integrations and service‑based architectures in cloud environments.

  • Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, with a strong cloud software engineering mindset.

  • Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL.

  • Experience designing and supporting APIs and service‑based architectures.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps automation, and software quality practices.

  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum delivery methodologies.

  • Moderate to strong experience with AI or GenAI concepts, integrations, or applied engineering use cases.

  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to work independently while being an effective team player in a fast‑paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AWS Glue or similar ETL or data transformation tools.

  • Tableau or data analytics experience, including support of datasets and dashboards.

  • Exposure to AI or GenAI concepts, integrations, or applied use cases.

  • Experience supporting applications in regulated environments with audit or compliance considerations.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week

Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
