Reporting to the VP, GS Product & Underwriting, the AVP Product & Underwriting (Casualty Lines), is a mid-level leadership role requiring a deep level of expertise in Casualty products, high levels of competency in building and maintaining stakeholder relationships, operating strategically and cross-functionality to influence and drive outcomes, and providing leadership within the organization.  The role has accountability for the development and deployment of countrywide line of business strategies, underwriting guidance, product management and idea generation, rate guidelines and analysis, underwriting and pricing tool management, training, and regulatory compliance issues for all Casualty Lines of business.  Scope of this role includes: All Casualty Lines of Business.

 

In addition to the core function of leading this line, this leadership role also is responsible for shaping and monitoring the overall portfolio health (P&L), bringing critical insights and recommendations to the Global Specialty Casualty Lines Business Unit leaders to support their profit and growth plans, leading product innovation and transformation efforts that advance our business units market position.  The strategic agenda for Casualty Lines is critical to Global Specialty’s strategic plan achievement.  This leadership role will create and implement the multi-year product agenda that is foundational to the business units.

 

Core Responsibilities

 

Strategy Development & Execution

·         Development and implement the product and underwriting strategy for all Casualty Lines of business

·         Lead the ongoing management and expansion of the product and underwriting appetite for all Casualty Lines of business

·         Creating and testing innovation and new data strategies

·         Partner with AVP Product & Underwriting (Property Lines), AVP Product & Underwriting (Financial Lines), key business leaders, and stakeholders/partners to proactively identify trends and opportunities, diagnose and strengthen all Casualty Lines performance and share/incorporate best practices across teams.  Maintain strong external knowledge and marketplace connectivity.

 

Planning, Performance & Portfolio Management

·         Assess areas of opportunity for profitable growth for all Casualty Lines of business.  In conjunction with business partners, develop underwriting and product plans to capitalize on identified areas of opportunity for all Casualty Lines of business

·         Monitor all Casualty Lines of business results and react quickly and effectively to growth and profit challenges

·         Monitoring emerging issues to inform appetite, coverage response, rate response, and risk tolerance

·         Gather marketplace insights and competitive intelligence to inform solutions (product, rate/price, appetite)

 

Underwriting Policy Development and Management

·         For all Casualty Lines of business, lead the development, management, and communication of Global Specialty underwriting policies

·         Lead the development of new or revised underwriting positions and appetite

·         Lead and support key Global Specialty segment initiative and/or projects

 

Product Agenda Development and Execution

·         For all Casualty Lines of business shape and lead the appetite, underwriting, product, and pricing model development agenda to optimize profitable growth

·         Provide leadership support on specific Casualty Lines of business product development initiatives

·         Work with legal and compliance to ensure that new products and product changes are compliant with state laws and regulations

 

People Management and Leadership

·         Lead a team of product and underwriting professionals with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion to deliver on the core strategic priorities

·         Build and maintain strong partnerships with key stakeholders to ensure alignment on strategic initiatives, insights, trends, and maintenance of all Casualty Lines

·         Build supportive and collaborative development plans designed to advance career experiences of the team

·         Participate and lead in enterprise forums to represent Global Specialty business and our interests

 

 

Qualifications:

·         10+ years’ experience within P & C Specialty Lines; focus and expertise in product & underwriting for Casualty Lines strongly preferred

·         Leadership and direct team management experience, strong mentoring and coaching discipline and prior experience developing talent and building teams

·         Superior understanding of Product Management & Product Development, inclusive of policy form development and interaction with actuaries and reinsurers.

·         Strong understanding of all aspects of underwriting execution

·         Ability to use data and analytics to understand and drive underwriting strategy

·         Understanding of financial concepts

·         Strong project management, negotiation, influencing, legal and analytical skills

·         Ability to absorb multi-disciplinary input and translate into effective actions 

·         Superior communication skills, both oral and written

·         Ability to collaborate to drive effective partnerships and deliver outcomes

·         Leadership and mentoring skills

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to deal confidently with all levels of the organization, including senior executives, field leadership, underwriters, and business partners

·         Demonstrate a talent to motivate and inspire team employees and cross functional teams

·         Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$180,000 - $270,000
